The Birth Of Burton Snowboards

Exhibit opened Sat. and Sun. 11-3 until Oct. 8th.

First Tracks:  Londonderry and the Birth of Burton will explore how in a small Vermont town, a dynamic young innovator, Jake Carpenter, took the concept of a snurf board and created not only an industry but also a worldwide snowboarding movement. The Londonderry story  also includes those who worked alongside Jake Carpenter and those who tested and perfected each snowboard iteration. From roadside hills and hidden trails at Snow Valley to half-pipes built by local enthusiasts, everyone’s contribution created this movement. The summation of these efforts led to the World Cup and the Olympics for local competitors and medal winners — Ross Powers, Hobie Chittenden, Mark Heingartner, and others.

The exhibit will include memorabilia, photos, videos and storyboards from late 70’s to early 90’s to capture the progression of the Burton snowboard, snowboarding “pioneers,” and those who contributed to the development of the Burton board, many of whom still reside in our area today.
